Hemel Hempstead (Camelot) RFC 26 : Southgate 5

Southgate were on a high after their terrific victory last week and were buoyed by the return from injury of no. 8 Kier but this was soon dampened by a try straight from the return of the kick off for Hemel Hempstead. From this point on Southgate were under pressure due to good play from the Hemel forwards and Southgate’s inability to retain possession from set pieces. This resulted in 2 more tries for the home team leaving Southgate 17 – 0 down at half time.

Southgate came into the second half determined to overturn the deficit and started this in the right way with a try from Callum who went over in the corner and Daisy narrowly missed the resulting conversion. Hemel then came back up the pitch and were only kept from going over again by a fantastic try saving tackle from club captain Atilla which spilled the ball and was touched down for a 22 drop out. At this point Daisy and Taff created a clever diversionary tactic making the Hemel players think that Taff was going to take the 22 but he instead threw the ball off the pitch and Daisy produced the ball on the other side of the pitch, tapped it quickly and ran the pitch to score a brilliant, and perfectly legal try. However the ref disallowed the try as he did not understand what was happening and Southgate were still faced with a 2 try deficit.

The second half saw a big improvement in scrimmaging from Southgate and this provided the platform for some great breaks from no. 8 Kier and some mazy runs from Taff. Hemel however had superior finishing abilities and scored 3 more tries to kill off the game with the last one coming from Southgate’s no. 7, Callum, forgetting which team he played for and passing the ball to the opposition 10 yards from the Southgate line. Southgate will be looking for much improved performances in the new year.
