Southgate RFC vs Barnet Elizabethans RFC

Southgate 21 Barnet Elizabethans 5

Coming into the game on the back of a six game losing Southgate desperately needed a victory and they hit the ground running in this close run affair.

After three minutes no. 8 Daisy picked the ball off the back of a scrum, bet one man and passed off to the supporting Callum who threw the full back with a dummy pass and went over the line for a try in his first game of the season.

Top scorer of the game, and in fact the season so far, Daisy tapped over the resulting conversion to get his first two points of the day.

Barnet piled on the pressure and were nearly line but for a last gasp tackle from Rob which spilled the ball and flanker, Shane managed to tap it down for a 22 drop out. Daisy was the only man switched on and noticed a gap in the Barnet defence, grabbed the ball and took a quick 22, ran three quarters of the pitch with the ball, beating several Barnet players and passed off to Adrian who had the simplest of finishes. Daisy again converted.

Southgate continued to press with some hard tackling from our two centres, Rob and Kieran, ensuring the opposition did not get a foothold in the game. Kieran was given a yellow card for what was perceived to be dangerous play which left Southgate down to 14 but this seemed to rally the remaining players. Daisy ruined his 100% kicking record after missing a difficult penalty from 30 metres out.

Southgate piled on the pressure and a quick tap penalty and switch to the wing let Atilla go over the line for Southgate’s third try. Daisy was faced with a difficult conversion three metres in from the sideline, but he kept his cool and slotted the ball between the posts.

The first half ended on a sour note with a quick tap penalty from Daisy was spoiled and he was illegally dumped and the offending Barnet play was rightly sin binned.

At half time master tactician, Simon Shuttler made two changes taking off Craig and Atilla and replacing them with Kevin Oliver and Padraig Blake.

The second half was a grimy affair with very little flowing rugby. Our hard tackling backs were wrongly punished by the referee striving to keep control on the game and our inside centre, Kieran received his second yellow card and was sent off. At this point the game turned dirty with a severe lack of discipline on the Barnet side. Southgate held their own with 14 men and a great break away from debutant Rob nearly resulted in another try but he was tackled before the line. Shane was substituted for Mikey. Barnet finally broke through the resilient Southgate defence and scraped over the line in the last play of the game.
